Historic trade deal with Japan to open Japanese markets to US agricultural products
JULY 23, 2025 – In a decisive demonstration of leadership and “America First” negotiation, President Donald J. Trump has secured a landmark trade agreement with Japan, ensuring significant opportunity for American farmers.
Under the agreement, Japan will eliminate or sharply reduce tariffs on approximately $7.2 billion of U.S. agricultural exports, including beef, pork, poultry, cheese, and ethanol, among others. Once implemented, over 90% of U.S. farm products imported into Japan will either be duty‑free or receive preferential access.
Notably, tariffs on U.S. beef will drop from 38.% to just 9%, and over 80% of U.S. dairy exports to Japan will get preferential tariff treatment. Products like almonds, blueberries, sweet corn, broccoli, and cherries will see immediate tariff elimination. A country specific quota system created through the agreement will guarantee preferential zero-duty access for wheat, corn starch, potato starch, and other vital exports from America’s heartland.
“This trade deal is just another example of President Trump’s ability to get deals done, especially to the benefit of the American farmer,” said Eric Branstad with Fields of Freedom Alliance. “This is a decisive victory for American agriculture, levels the playing field with one of our top trading partners, and tremendously benefits our rural communities.”
Japan historically has been a top export market for U.S. agriculture products, and this trade deal will continue to expand fair market opportunities. When U.S. agricultural commodities compete on a level playing field, everyone wins. In exchange for this expanded market access, Japan has committed to an unprecedented $550 billion investment package, with the U.S. retaining 90% of investment profits.
